ENGLISH: This half-hour documentary tells the story of a community through its musical instruments, an inspiring story showing how it has been able, with good humor, to survive and create something out of nothing – and produce a musical instrument (the cajón) that is now valued throughout the world. The story is told by a woman – Peta Robles – who, herself, has had to confront serious obstacles but who, like her Afro-Peruvian community, has risen above them.
In addition to prize-winning Afro-Peruvian percussionist Peta Robles, the film features jazz great John Santos, Huevito and Lalo Izquierdo. An episode in our series Speaking of Rhythm, it is now available to the educational market for purchase or a screening event.
ESPAÑOL: Esta película de media hora presenta una historia inspiracional de un pueblo a través de sus instrumentos músicales. Indico el pueblo afroperuano que, con buen humor, ha creado “algo de nada” y que dió al mundo el cajón que ahora se utiliza en el flamenco moderno, el jazz latino, y otros generos musicales. La historia nos cuenta principalmente la percusionista Peta Robles quien tuvo que superar sus propios dificultades a ser percusionista feminina.
La película contienen también entrevistas y actuación de John Santos, Huevito y Lalo Izquierdo. Es un capítulo de nuestra serie, Hablando del ritmo (Speaking of Rhythm). Organizaciones educativas ya pueden comprarlo o presentarlo como parte de un evento.
ENGLISH: Peta Robles comes from a family of dancers, musicians and actors, many of whom toured and taught in the United States. Even under slavery, her Afro-Peruvian community found a way to create something out of nothing and exemplifies the resilience of the human spirit. This is the source of the cajón drum of Peru, now used in flamenco, Latin jazz, and other music.
ESPAÑOL: Peta Robles viene de una familia de bailarines, músicos, y actores, de los cuales muchos han realizó giras a través del mundo. Su tío Lalo Izquierdo representó al Perú en los Juegos Olímpicos en 1968, su hermana Katalina Robles Izquierdo actuaba en los Smithsonians’ Folkways Festival. Y su creativa comunidad afroperuana, con pocos materiales, desarrolló muchos instrumentos y dió al mundo el cajón afroperuano.
